Arts Council Creates Curated Page on Kickstarter
The Arts Council of Greater New Haven becomes first Connecticut organization To partner with Kickstarter’s Curated Pages

The Arts Council of Greater New Haven is pleased to announce its partnership with Kickstarter in utilizing Curated Pages. Curated Pages, the newest feature to Kickstarter’s already impressive set of tools for online fundraising, allows institutions and organizations to highlight creative projects that align with their mission and/or region. Kickstarter, the largest online funding platform for creative projects in the world, enables artists, filmmakers, musicians, designers, writers, illustrators, explorers, curators and performers to realize their projects, events, and dreams through a unique all-or-nothing funding method. The New York Times deemed Kickstarter an “unexpected influence on indie culture, a new model for a D.I.Y. generation.”

“We hope our partnership with Kickstarter will draw more attention to the amazingly creative projects of the Greater New Haven region, encourage more of our artists to use this vital fundraising platform, and enable them to reach donors they would have otherwise never had access to,” says Cynthia Clair, Executive Director of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven. Currently, the Arts Council of Greater New Haven is the only organization in Connecticut partnering with Kickstarter through Curated Pages.

Kickstarter is already a successful tool for many New Haven-based artists and organizations. Recently, New Haven’s Pantochino Productions raised over $15,000 for their fall production of Cinderella Skeleton, The Musical. And upstart dance company Elm City Dance Collective raised over 100% of their projected fundraising goal for their interactive masquerade ball by engaging with over 70 donors.

Judy Atlas drew inspiration for her abstract paintings from the “scenery of the street” - ranging from remnants of European antiquities in ancient Pompeii to the notices, flyers, and graffiti seen on the streets of contemporary New York. The acrylic and mixed media paintings utilize shapes, images, light, and mark making to reflect the artist’s personal journey, and to begin one for the viewer.
Sound Influence, Part II
Dizzy Rob Stull
Dizzy © Rob Stull
The Arts Council of Greater New Haven is pleased to present Sound Influence, Part II, in the Sumner McKnight Crosby Jr. Gallery, 70 Audubon St., 2nd floor. The exhibition is curated by local painter and muralist Katro Storm and will be on view during business hours from January 20, 2012 through March 2, 2012. A public reception is scheduled for Friday, February 3, from 5-7 pm.

Katro Storm, the curator, is a prolific artist who delivers meaningful and thoughtful portraits of inspirational leaders and influential city landmarks. A native of New Haven, a former student and teacher at the Educational Center for the Arts, he is a community mentor who continually seeks to create new work and inspire others to do the same. “It’s the challenge of creating something out of nothing that makes it exciting,” states Storm. “To push myself to a new level each time I paint.” With Sound Influence, Part II, the exhibition examines, as Storms states, “how important sound is to creating art.”

The art on display manifests very different responses to sounds that are universal. The exhibit reflects the “sound” environment in which each artist works in, be it the sound surrounding the space they work in or the music they listen to while creating. There are also artists who transfer their visual interpretation of music onto canvas, much like choreographers who compose a dance piece based on a specific piece of music.

Participating artists include: Aoke, Michael Angelis, Ian Appelgate, Jahmane Art, Lee Adam Beard, Rafael Cornier, Dooley-O, DS7, Renaldo Davidson, Orlando Dome, Paul Duda, EROS 165, Hayward Gatling, Rob Greenberge, Ellen Hackl Fagan, Aniko Horvath, Marta Machabeli, Conrad Mecheski, Destiny S. Palmer, Paul Panamerenko, John Rodrigues Brewer, Steve Ross, Reo Russo, William T. Saunders, Craig Streater Smith, Rob Stull, Kristin Thomas, Alison K. Walsh, Janet Warner & Charlie Win

Giampietro Gallery Presents Chromacosm
Melissa Brown
Melissa Brown
Giampietro Gallery is pleased to present Chromacosm, a group exhibition that brings together six artists who embrace color as a primary and essential element of their work. Artists presented are: Melissa Brown, Clint Jukkala, Zachary Keeting, Joshua Marsh, Douglas Melini, and Tamara Zahaykevich. The exhibit is on view from February 3 to March 3, 2012.

Conjuring worlds, both abstract and representational, the artists in Chromacosm think and speak in color as much as through drawing, imagery, or material. While associations abound, color here is felt more than named. Jewel-like hues, chromatic spills, and atmospheric gradations, evoke imagined spaces made of vibrant pigments. The works in Chromacosm are not so muchaboutcolor, rather color is the DNA that brings these images and objects to life.

Giampietro Gallery is located in the historic AC Gilbert Erector Set factory complex, less than 1/2 mile from interstate I-91 and about 2 miles from Union Railroad Station at 315 Peck St., New Haven, CT 06513. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 10am – 4pm and Saturday 11am – 4pm or by appointment. For more information please call the Gallery at (203) 777-7760 or visit us on the web at www.GiampietroGallery.com

Partnerships dissolve, alliances shift, and romances ignite as a tragic accident unleashes the town’s mysterious history. Blurring the line between body and spirit, Good Goods is an otherworldly love story of the (dis)possessed.

Whitney Humanities Center Auditorium, 53 Wall Street
*Followed at 6:30 by a free screening of "Prometheus - Poem of Fire" - a documentary and concert film featuring the music of Alexander Scriabin and the Yale Symphony Orchestra

About Spectral Scriabin:
Russian composer Alexander Scriabin caused a sensation in 1915, staging what was most likely the first multimedia concert in history. Designing a clavier à lumière to project colors onto the stage as it was played, Scriabin pioneered ideas relating colors and musical pitch. Nearly a century later, celebrated Georgian pianist Eteri Andjaparidze and MacArthur Foundation Fellow Jennifer Tipton explore the legacy of this late Romantic composer through excerpts from his Poeme Languide in B Major and other works, including Feuillet d’Album in F-sharp Major, Opus Posthumous. This extravaganza of lush music and spectacular lightshow is truly "something unforgettable" (New York Press).
