The Arts Council Presents Web Versions
Suzan Shutan
Suzan Shutan
The Arts Council of Greater New Haven is pleased to announce Web Versions, its second show at Perspectives… The Gallery at Whitney Center at 200 Leeder Hill Drive in Hamden, Connecticut, south entrance. An artist reception will take place on Saturday, February 23rd from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be an artist talk at 1:30 p.m. and origami artist Benjamin Parker will be demonstrating his unique paper tessellations process.

Web Versions was curated by Debbie Hesse and Steve Olsen. According to Hesse, “While the title Web Versions suggests the online realm of virtual interconnectedness, this exhibit explores ways artists embrace the low tech, often labor-intensive material world to present meditations on the passage of time.”

Artwork in the show, diverse in media, by Sean Boggs, Kevin Daly, Sarah Beth Goncarova, Mary Judge, Benjamin Parker, Suzan Shutan, Marjorie Sopkin and Thomas Stavovy, share a fascination with repetitive pattern, scale and color to reference traditions of textiles.

Web Versions will be on view through March 30th, 2013. The gallery is open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-7pm, and Saturdays from 1-4pm.

For more information about Web Versions and Perspectives...The Gallery at Whitney Center, call the Arts Council at (203) 772-2788.
A Tribute to Langston Hughes
Renaldo Davidson
Renaldo Davidson
The Arts Council of Greater New Haven, in collaboration with curator Katro Storm, is presenting “A Tribute to Langston Hughes” in the Sumner McKnight Crosby Jr. Gallery at 70 Audubon St., 2nd Floor in New Haven. The exhibition and special performance will celebrate Black History Month 2013.

The show will be on view from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, February 8th to April 5th, 2013. An artists’ reception will take place on Friday, February 22nd from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception will include a special performance at 6 p.m.

“A Tribute to Langston Hughes” will feature the performing artist “Ade” Anthony Thompson, visual artist Renaldo Davidson, and video artist NJ Martin. The exhibition pays tribute to Langston Hughes; poet, novelist, playwright, and leading voice of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s.

As Storm describes it, the show will be layered and include collaborations because Hughes liked to work collaboratively. The best time to see all of the layers is at the reception on February 22nd. There, Thompson will be performing as Jesse B. Simple, one of Hughes most memorable characters. Davidson’s visual art, inspired by Hughes’ poems and Thompson’s characterization of Jesse B. Simple, will be hanging on the gallery walls, and NJ Martin will be showing video work he has made to pay tribute to Hughes.

For those who are not able to make the February 22nd event, NJ Martin will be filming Thompson’s performance and will edit a video piece that will run in the gallery after the performance date (from March 4th to April 5th).

For more information about the exhibit call The Arts Council at (203) 772-2788.

Historian, architect, and author Colin Caplan will present “New Haven FIRSTS: an exploration of local inventions,” on Monday, February 25, at 6 pm at New Haven Free Public Library, 133 Elm St.

Since New Haven was invented 375 years ago, hundreds of thousands of people have lived, worked, studied and visited our City. And some of them have changed the world forever through their inventions. From the first city plan in the U.S. to the pedal bicycle, New Haven has always been fertile ground for innovation, as attendees will discover in this program.

Colin Caplan was born and raised in New Haven, where he developed an early appreciation for architecture and history prior to earning a Masters degree in architecture from Tulane University. Caplan has worked with several architecture firms in New Haven, and heads up “Taste of New Haven,” offering culinary and cultural tours that spotlight New Haven's diverse restaurant scene. He has been featured in national television shows and publications. Caplan is the author of New Haven (Then & Now); A Guide to Historic New Haven CT; 101 Glimpses of New Haven; and Tales from a Connecticut Hamlet, about the Westville section of New Haven. Talk on West Rock at New Haven Museum
Thursday, February 28 at 6:30 pm
The landscape of New Haven has inspired generations of artists across countless media. In a special “Treasures from Two Collections” talk during the New Haven Museum’s 150th Anniversary year, Douglas K. S. Hyland, Director of the New Britain Museum of American Art, will use images from both museums’ collections to discuss how West Rock captured the imagination of three artists who happened to be contemporaries: John Warner Barber, Frederic Edwin Church and George Henry Durrie. Hyland’s talk will cover an interesting contrast between the revered Church, representing the Hudson River School, and the local artists Barber and Durrie, representing the art of glimpses into small communities. For more information, contact Michelle Cheng, Director of Education, at (203) 562-4183 ext. 11 or education@newhavenmuseum.org.
"London by Dickens"
In honor of Charles Dickens’ birthday (February 7), New Haven Free Public Library presents LONDON BY DICKENS: film and discussion with Dickens scholar Fred Guida, on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 pm.

In 1958 a very young Alan Bates was in New York City to reprise the role in Look Back in Anger that had recently made him a star in London. Between rehearsals Bates was prevailed upon to do this half-hour montage, “London By Dickens,” drawn from several of the author’s lesser known short writings. It is one of Bates’ first television appearances, and relatively unknown until its recent release in DVD by a CT film distributor. Copies of the DVD will be available for purchase at this screening. (The DVD also includes a short film of a youthful Richard Burton performing Dylan Thomas’ “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.”)

Fred Guida has presented many Dickens programs at Yale Center for British Art, and recently screened “London By Dickens” at The Museum of Modern Art in NYC. The public is invited to enjoy this presentation at no charge at the Ives Main Library, 133 Elm St. For more information please call the library at 203-946-8835.
