Steve Reich is widely regarded as the greatest living American composer, and that distinction is largely credited to his 1988 masterpiece “Different Trains.” Composed for string quartet and pre-recorded tape, “Different Trains” relies on recorded testimonies of Holocaust survivors as a melodic base for the composition, which was described by music historian Richard Taruskin as "the only adequate musical response – one of the few adequate artistic responses in any medium – to the Holocaust.” Join the Haven String Quartet for a rare performance of this masterpiece along with original string quartets by African composers Kevin Volans and Justinian Tamuzuza. INTERCAMBIO Presents Mates of State and The Stepkids
INTERCAMBIO launches its new community art initiative at PROJECT STOREFRONTS, with a spotlight on Connecticut-based recording artists MATES OF STATE and THE STEPKIDS, on Friday, February 24, 2012, 8 PM, at Studio 756, located at 756 Chapel Street in downtown New Haven.

Mates of State are an indie pop duo, based in Connecticut. The group is composed of the husband-and-wife team of Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel. Their seventh album Mountaintops was released on September 13, 2011. Mates of State have toured with Spoon, Death Cab for Cutie, and We Are Scientists.

The Stepkids are a Connecticut-based psychedelic soul band comprised by Tim Walsh, Jeff Gitelman, and Dan Edinberg. They have toured with the Horrors and performed at South by Southwest, CMJ Music Marathon (where they were named a “can't-miss” act by SPIN magazine), and others. Their self-titled debut album is out on Stones Throw Records.

The performance takes place at Studio 756, in the former Goldie and Libro building, a former music store that was a hub for New Haven's vibrant music scene for decades. On the second floor, where Goldie and Libro traditionally stocked percussion instruments, INTERCAMBIO will present Drum Room, a one-night pop-up retail event featuring artist books, zines, and prints from DETRITUS and records from area labels and stores for sale, as well as DJ sets.

INTERCAMBIO is a community arts organization, facilitating creative exchange and collaboration across media and diverse communities in the city of New Haven. Selected by PROJECT STOREFRONTS’ pilot program supporting artists and “creative entrepreneurs,” INTERCAMBIO will be in residence at Studio 756 curating performances, arts workshops, readings, art/design vendor fairs, alongside on-going efforts to support local artists in securing financial and cultural support and attention for their projects.

Tickets for this event are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. For more information visit www.weareintercambio.org

It’s 1935. The Great Depression grinds on. A group of taxi drivers huddle in a shabby union hall, debating whether or not to strike for fair wages. One by one, the drivers come forward to tell their stories, recounting the injustices and pressures they face. It’s war as the men and women fight desperately for their innate human dignity.

“This play was written during a time of serious unrest and discord. While clearly a piece of well-made propaganda, the play reflected the real fear and concerns of its Depression-era audiences; the fear of losing one’s job, being unable to provide for loved ones, being forced to make compromising choices about the way one wants to live, and being crushed by an economic system that one has little to no say over. Sound familiar?” said Megan Keith Chenot, company president.

The cast is comprised of NHTC company members Hilary Brown (Florrie), Megan Chenot (Dr. Benjamin), Peter Chenot (Sid), Jeremy Funke (Miller), Erich Greene (Irv/Clayton), George Kulp (Fatt/Grady), Hallie Martenson (Edna), Steve Scarpa (Keller), Jenny Schuck (The Secretary), Christian Shaboo (Phillips), and J. Kevin Smith (Fayette/Gunman), along with Richard Bean (Dr. Barnes) and Brian Willetts (Joe). Martenson is assistant directing. Ben Michalak is stage managing.

Making History: Antiquaries in Britain
Thursday, February 2, 2012 - Sunday, May 27, 2012
Tuesday to Saturday: 10:00am - 5:00pm. Sunday: 12:00pm to 5:00pm.

Yale Center for British Art (1080 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT)

The Yale Center for British Art holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of British art outside the United Kingdom, presenting the development of British art and culture from the Elizabethan period to the present day. Together with the Reference Library, the Center’s collections of paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, rare books, and manuscripts provide an exceptional resource for understanding the story of British art. "Making History: Antiquaries in Britain"celebrates the achievement of the Society of Antiquaries of London, the oldest independent learned society concerned with the study of the past.

The exhibition explores the Society’s contribution to our understanding of Britain’s history. It focuses on the discovery, recording, preservation, and interpretation of Britain’s past through its material remains, investigating beliefs current before the Society was founded, and reveals how new discoveries, technologies, and interpretations have transformed our understanding of the history of Britain since the eighteenth century. A portion of this exhibition will complement Shakespeare at Yale by featuring portraits of rulers such as Henry VI, Richard III, Elizabeth I, and Henry V. Other objects will include a cross found at the Battle of Bosworth, where Richard III was killed, a soldier’s spur from the Battle of Towton, fought during the English War of the Roses, and fragments from rare books of "Richard III" and "The Whole Contention between Two Famous Houses", from "Henry VI, Part III".

Free and open to the public.

International Festival Performance Opportunities
The International Festival of Arts & Ideas annually provides performance opportunities for performing artists from our own neighborhood, and we are once again looking for performers to join us at this year's Festival. Applications are currently being accepted from local and regional artists for a variety of performance opportunities on stage or in activity tents.

Deadline: March 15, 2012
Online application available at www.artidea.org/performingartists

We welcome submissions from all performing disciplines including music, theater, dance, and storytelling. In particular we are seeking artists performing original work. The Festival's programming staff will review all submissions and offer selected artists performance slots weekend afternoons during the Festival (June 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, 2012). Performances will occur outdoors on or near stages on the New Haven Town Green. We welcome applications by artists whose work requires a stage and audio equipment (we'll provide a professionally managed and outfitted venue), as well as artists whose work might be best-suited to a non-traditional performance location. Performers should expect to use the Festival's backline and audio equipment (drum kit, key board, amps). Selected companies may advise if their needs differ greatly. Set up or removal time may not exceed 15 minutes. Work which requires substantial time to install or remove equipment or scenery isn't appropriate for this opportunity.

2012 ACTIVITY TENTS
Online application available at www.artidea.org/performingartists
Activities should offer audiences hands on, interactive programs such as games, crafts or puzzles. Be creative. Activities must be prepared to run from 12 Noon - 6 pm June 23rd and 24th.

For more information about the International Festival, please visit www.artidea.org

The Dinosaur Hunters
Thursday, February 23 at 1:00 pm
THE DINOSAUR HUNTERS is an exciting new musical for kids that tells the true story of O.C. Marsh and E.D. Cope, two of America's earliest paleontologists, who were known as much for their bitter scientific feud as they were for their incredible discoveries. Together they raced across the country, competed for glory, slandered each other in the press, and added more bones to the North American fossil record than any other scientists in history!

Birds of Prey
Saturday, February 25
11:00 am, 12:15 pm and 1:30 pm

These birds—among them eagles, hawks, falcons and owls—also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. This presentation, with five live birds, by Wingmasters, will explain raptor predation, their place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world.
