New Exhibit at New Haven Museum
The New Haven Museum is proud to announce the opening of its latest exhibition “New Haven’s Sentinels: The Art and Science of East and West Rock.” On Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 5:30 PM, the Museum will inaugurate the exhibition with a reception that is open to the public free of charge. Featuring many paintings and works from the New Haven Museum’s collection and geological objects from the Peabody Museum and Wesleyan University, the exhibition celebrates the local innovations in art and geology in 19th century New Haven.

The New Haven Museum collaborated with Dr. Jelle de Boer, Harold T. Stearns Professor of Earth Science, Emeritus at Wesleyan University and author of Stories in Stone: How Geology Influenced Connecticut History and Culture, on this exciting project that centers on the changes in the worlds of art and science and the significance and inspiration of New Haven’s local geology from the founding of the colony to our modern city.

The new exhibition, made possible with partial support from United Illuminating, will be on view until May 2012.
The New Haven Museum, founded in 1862 as The New Haven Colony Historical Society, is located in downtown New Haven at 114 Whitney Avenue. For more information, please contact Jason Bischoff-Wurstle at (203) 562-4183 x18 or photos@newhavenmuseum.org.

4 the body + 4 the soul
The Branford Artists Cooperative is pleased to announce 4 the body + 4 the soul, an art exhibition with member artists Rita Brieger and Owen Sea Luckey at the Willoughby Wallace Library in Stony Creek. Sponsored by the Friends of Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library, the exhibit runs from January 1 through January 25, 2012, with an Opening Reception on Sunday, January 8 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. (Snow date: January 15, same times)

Together, Rita and Owen present a collection of work that defines the figure in bold and abstract impressions. But their use of color and pattern reach beyond the physical confines of paint and textile, creating movement, feeling, and soul. Rita is an abstract painter who combines color, texture and emotions on canvas. Owen is a textile artist who combines hand knitting and sewn accessories to create one-of-a-kind pieces using sumptuous yarns, custom dyed wools, silk velvets and beaded trims.

The Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library is located at 146 Thimble Islands Road, Stony Creek, CT. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit www.wwml.org or www.branfordartistscooperative.com.

Anne Marie Menta
Anne Marie Menta
Thurs., Jan. 5, 7:30 p.m. Singer-songwriters: Anne Marie Menta and her band; Shellye Valauskas with Dean Falcone.

Anne Marie Menta hails from New Haven, CT., where she has been a long time favorite singer/songwriter. Her musical credits include fronting various rock & roll, folk, and country bands as a singer/guitarist, including The Wanderers, Sugar Moon, Sky Riders, and Rodeo Radio. In the mid 90s, she decided to concentrate on her own original music, and those tunes of hers that she “snuck” into her cover band repertoire now became her main focus. But, the country, folk, and pop music that she loved continued to be an influence in her writing.

Shellye Valauskas is a sweet songwriter who cares for catchy rhythms and hooks. Her CD "Box It Up," recorded with her band The Shellye Valauskas Experience, is a box of secrets, surprises and delights. By the time she formed the band, vocalist/guitarist Shellye Valauskas was an established solo performer, winning the New Haven Advocate’s Grand Band Slam readers’ poll and rating a slot in New York’s CMJ Marathon. As her songwriting collaborator and bandmate, she enlisted ace guitarist Dean Falcone, who’s served the Connecticut music scene since the early ’80s with Jon Brion in The Excerpts, his own Dean and the Dragsters, and a host of others. Valauskas and Falcone will perform as a duo at the Best Video Performance Space.

Mr. Maloof unknowingly stumbled into the tomb of a photographic pharaoh. The life and work of Vivian Maier has captivated a growing audience of photographers and fans around the world. This promises to be a lively evening of shared images and ideas about life, photography and art. Be part of the dialogue!
