2011 Arts Awards Recipients
The Arts Council pays tribute to Great Adaptations, the creations of ambitious and industrious minds.

Will Baker, in his brief but galvanizing tenure as executive director of the Young Men’s Institute Library, has rescued the organization from the dust of history and reestablished this urban sanctuary as “a center of literary life, education, and social debate in New Haven.”

Thea Buxbaum has, over the balance of two decades, provided artists with space in which to live and create, and, in doing so, has transformed New Haven’s Westville neighborhood into a place where the arts flourish and a cultural destination marked by the yield of its creative community.

Eileen Carpinella, as executive director of VSA affiliate Young Audiences Arts for Learning Connecticut, has tirelessly and spiritedly engaged with, and provided opportunity to, artists with disabilities, both young and older, and has shared their extraordinary talents with children and families throughout the state and beyond.

Aaron Jafferis is a nationally recognized and award-winning hip-hop poet and playwright whose work mines the human condition and whose involvement in the local community has inspired younger generations to explore, though language and art, the cultural lessons and ideals that reside in every corner of society.

A Broken Umbrella Theatre is dedicated to sharing with its audiences, by way of off-the-beaten path, site-specific and thought-provoking productions, the legends, lore, people, and places that have contributed to the compelling history of New Haven and the lives of those who have long called the city home.

C. Newton Schenck III Award for Lifetime Achievement in and Contribution to the Arts: Baba David Coleman is a storyteller who communicates lessons of life and tradition through rhythm, a percussionist whose drumming connects us all to that which lies within and beyond ourselves.

New Haven Idol
Tent City 2011 Campaign to Benefit Homeless Youth
Join New Haven Youth As They Come Together For An Important Cause

Do you believe that our young people can make a positive difference in our communities and neighborhoods? If your answer is yes, then join New Haven youth this Friday for NEW HAVEN IDOL -- a singing competition with area high school students! All proceeds from the event go towards the Tent City 2011 Campaign to benefit homeless youth in shelter.

In the US, between 1.5 and 3 million youth are without stable permanent housing and most of them are teenagers. Statistics show that in New Haven Public Schools nearly 300 youth are without stable permanent housing--and this is likely a gross underestimate. Because our youth are our greatest asset, Tent City 2011 is focused on our young people -- and we are proud that New Haven youth have come out to raise awareness on the impact of homelessness on youth.

Here are THREE easy ways to support Tent City 2011 Campaign to Benefit Homeless Youth:

Friday, November 4th -- New Haven Idol @ the Shubert Theatre at 7:30pm -- Join Master of Ceremonies and nationally acclaimed speaker, writer and entertainer Frank E. Brady (www.frankebrady.com) as New Haven high school students compete for the grand prize of world-class music lessons from the Yale School of Music and a feature performance at the 2012 International Festival of Arts and Ideas. Tickets available at www.shubert.com. VIP tickets can also be purchased from Lynn Lyons (203.946.7907). VIP tix include post-event reception with special guests, celebrity judges and event winners.

Sunday, November 6th -- "Home In New Haven: Concrete Dreams" @ Coop High School in New Haven -- a theatrical production written, directed and produced by New Haven students! Performance is at 6:00pm. The poignant and moving event includes Guest Speaker, Victoria Worcester, and feature slideshow on the impact of homelessness on youth. Tickets available at www.shubert.com or by calling 203.946.7907!

DONATE at anytime to Tent City 2011 at www.uwgnh.org/tentcity! Checks can also be made out to "United Way of Greater New Haven” and sent to Community Services Administration, 165 Church Street—2nd Floor, New Haven, CT 06510.

Performance at Best Video
Stefan Christensen of Estrogen Highs
Stefan Christensen of Estrogen Highs
Thursday, Nov. 10, 7:30 p.m. Best Video Performance Space will feature two local underground rock performers and songwriters in solo acoustic mode. Stefan Christensen, who will open with a short set, leads the Estrogen Highs, a garage rock band that has put out several vinyl 45s, albums and an EP over the past few years. Christensen also plays in the bands Iron Hand and Medication.

Headliner Dan Greene has been a mainstay of the New Haven underground scene for a decade and a half, first with the Butterflies of Love--currently on unofficial hiatus--and presently with the Mountain Movers. Greene, an incredibly prolific and talented songwriter, writes all the tunes for the Mountain Movers after sharing the duties with Jeffrey Greene (no relation) in the Butterflies of Love. Greene toured Britain as part of the Butterflies; the Mountain Movers have released four albums—one on compact disc and three on vinyl.

The Coffee Bar will be open with a fine selection of delicious snacks and
refreshments, including Willoughby's coffee. Admission—as for all of Best Video’s Performance Space events—is free.
New Haven Theater Company Presents "The Seafarer"

New Haven Theater Company (NHTC) will present The Seafarer, written by Conor McPherson and directed by Hilary Brown, November 10-12, 17-19 at 8pm at 118 Court Street, New Haven. The cast is comprised of Peter Chenot (Nicky), George Kulp (Mr. Lockhart), J. Kevin Smith (Sharky), John Watson (Richard) and Bob Osborne (Ivan).

In The Seafarer, redemption can come from the most unlikely of places. Sharky, bereft of wife, job, and hope, finds himself playing a Christmas Eve poker game with his brother and friends, when a mysterious stranger arrives, prepared to wager for more than Sharky bargains. “The Seafarer breaks through our secular smugness and manages to make the small gestures of connection, charity and change feel like the true resurrection,” said the New Yorker.

Tickets for the show are $20. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit www.newhaventheatercompany.com.

Hamden Art League Presents Lecture on John Singer Sargent
Fred Biamonte
Fred Biamonte
The November 8th meeting of the Hamden Art League will host New Britain Museum of American Art educator Fred Biamonte. His lecture, titled From Portrait to Landscape: the Evolution of John Singer Sargent, will be a psychobiography of Sargent’s life, with an emphasis on his unique relationships with men and women. Fred will talk about how the artist's androgynous nature enabled him to capture the essence of the personality in his portraits, and to express his passion, even in his landscapes.

Biamonte is a docent, educator, and lecturer at the New Britain Museum of American Art. He gives art history talks with a focus on the psychobiographies of American and European artists, including Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Andrew Wyeth and others. Fred has also lectured at public libraries, retirement communities, service organizations, civic organizations, and societies of working artists. This will be a great opportunity to hear about the influence of Sargent's life upon his work.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 8th in the Social Hall of the Miller Memorial Library Senior Center, 2901 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden. Socializing and a brief business meeting are from 7:15 to 7:30 p.m., followed by the lecture from 7:30 to 8:30. Free and open to the public. For more info on the League, visit www.hamdenartleague.com
