Artbras Benefit Breast Center at Smilow
Omni Hotel is hosting the first live runway auction of artbras at a champagne brunch on Sunday, Oct. 9th from 11am to 2pm. All proceeds will benefit the Breast Center at the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven.

ArtBra-New Haven is the creative expression of survivors and artists, a method of thanking all who support cancer patients while they navigate the odyssey of breast cancer. Leslie Prodis from Metalicious Studio in Branford, www.leslieprodis.com, is one of many artists featured in the show.

Bruce Barber, host of NPR's “Yale Cancer Center Answers”, is the MC and Auctioneer. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro will be honored for her groundbreaking work on the “No Drive-Through Mastectomies” legislation, which has helped so many post-operative patients. Eileen Kaplan, noted author of Laughter Is The Breast Medicine, will be work as a model and be available at a book signing following the fashion show.

Erik Friedlander's Bonebridge

On Friday, October 7th, Firehouse 12 is pleased to welcome cellist Erik Friedlander back with his new group Bonebridge, celebrating the release of their new album Bonebridge (SkipStone). Friedlander turns to his memories of the American South for this groups inspiration. The show will be held int two sets: the first is at 8:30pm and will cost $18 and the second set will be at 10pm and will cost $12. Join us at 45 Crown Street, New Haven for the show.

"Fela" at the Shubert
This 2010 Tony-winning musical tells the story of 70's Nigerian musician, Fela Kuti, in a production featuring Fela’s soulful Afrobeat rhythms and explosive choreography by Bill T. Jones. Fela defied an oppressive military government and devoted his life and music to the struggle for freedom and human dignity. FELA! is a triumphant tale of courage, passion and love. Presented by the Branford Artists Cooperative, check out TAKE 5 @ BAC!, an exhibition of five Branford artists hosted by the Branford Artists Cooperative (BAC). Featuring Owen Sea Luckey, a textile artist; Dana Baldwin Naumann, a sculptor and painter; Ray Matthews, a glass blower; Kristin Merrill, a jeweler and sculptor; and Scott Paterson, a painter. The show runs through October 28th and is free and open to the public.

The BAC gallery is located at 211 Montowese Street in Branford, and open Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-3pm and other times by appointment.

Free 2 Spit Returns, featuring Bryonn Bain

Free 2 Spit, one of the East-Coast's hottest venues, will be featuring Bryonn Bain with his new book titled The Prophet Returns on Friday October 7th at 7pm, located at the New Haven Peoples Center. The event is hosted By Baub Bidon and J-Sun, with special guest hosts King Thai and Deejay Conscious. Sponsored by the First Friday Cafe.

Brooklyn's own Nuyorican spoken word champion, Bryonn Bain is a poet, prison activist, actor and author who "interweaves social justice themes and spirituality with intricate wordplay, song and soaring stage presence." The Prophet Returns is his hip hop generation "remix" of Kahlil Gibran's classic -- The Prophet -- and was edited by Tony award winning poet and activist Suheir Hammad. The Harriet Tubman Double Trio at Firehouse 12

On Friday, October 14th, the Harriet Tubman Double Trio will celebrate the release of their new album Ascension (SunnySide) in their premiere performance at Firehouse 12, 45 Crown Street, New Haven. The album documents a performance recorded over ten years ago at The Knitting Factory in New York City in which the trio of guitarist Brandon Ross, bassist Melvin Gibbs, and drummer JT Lewis was augmented by trumpeter Ron Miles and turntablists DJ Logic and DJ Singh. For this performance the core Harriet Tubman trio will be augmented by cornetist Graham Haynes, and turntablists DJ Logic and Val Inc.

Bregamos Community Theater presents A Peasant of El Salvador
Bregamos Community Theater and the New Haven / León Sister City Project will present the play A Peasant of El Salvador (Un Campesino de El Salvador) at Fair Haven School’s black box theatre, October 6th-14th.

A Peasant of El Salvador (by Peter Gould and Stephen Stearns) tells the story of a farmer who struggles to maintain his family and land during a rising tide of economic instability and political violence. Set in El Salvador in the 1970’s and 1980’s, this is a classic story that speaks to realities in the United States and Latin America today. This production is part of an ongoing bi-national theatre project exploring social justice in New Haven and its sister city of León, Nicaragua.

The bilingual play, directed by Rob Esposito, welcomes both English- and Spanish-speaking audiences. $12 performances are Friday, October 7 at 8pm, Saturday, October 8 at 3pm, Thursday, October 13 at 8pm, and Friday, October 14 at 8pm. Weekend of Harry Potter-Themed Fundraisers to Benefit Blackstone Library

On Saturday, October 29, at 1pm and Sunday, October 30, at 12pm, wizards and witches ages 6 and up can step into the James Blackstone Memorial Library in Branford for two hours of exciting activities at A Hogwarts Halloween for Kids. Stop by Ollivander’s Wand Shop and attend a Potions, Divination, and Charms class with your favorite Hogwarts professor. Perhaps you’ll be the next Triwizard Champion when you try your hand at some magical games and crafts! Wear your smartest set of dress robes and display your house colors proudly. $25/person; advance reservations required.

Enjoy a night of wizardly potions, sumptuous provisions and magical surprises at a just-for-grown-ups-night at the Patrons, Potions and Provisions Gala for Adults on Saturday, October 29, beginning at 6pm. Music and a silent auction are being arranged by the spirits. Come in your most creative Wizardly wardrobe or your favorite Muggle get-up and enjoy a wandering feast, sinful spells, and deadly company. $125/person; advance reservations required.

Fundraiser to Benefit the New Haven Chorale

The public is invited to join the members and friends of the New Haven Chorale at an Elegant Wine Tasting and Auction to benefit the Chorale on Thursday, October 27, from 6-9pm, at the Pine Orchard Yacht and Country Club in Branford. The event will feature superior wines and champagne provided by Amity Wine and Spirits, hearty hors d’oeuvres, Italian pastries and coffee as well as entertainment by members of the Chorale and unusual auction items. Call for Actors
The Nine Mile Players Community Theater program of Oxford, Connecticut is pleased to announce auditions for "Little Women", which will be performed December 2, 3 and 4 at Oxford Center School.

Auditions will take place at the Grange, 482 Oxford Road, Oxford on Thursday, October 6th from 6-9 pm and Saturday, October 9th from 1-5 pm. Little Women is the heartwarming and timeless story of the four March sisters under the care of their beloved mother "Marmie" and their efforts to make the best of their situation while their father is fighting in the civil war. All roles are open.

Rehearsals will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9pm and Saturdays 12-5pm with tech week Nov. 28-Dec. 1. Cast will be called to rehearsals as needed. Anyone interested in auditioning should prepare a two minute monologue and may be asked to read from the script.

No Boundaries Performances at Yale

NO BOUNDARIES: A Series of Global Performances, featuring a program called Think Jam: A Symposium on Improvisation Across Disciplines. This program will be held in conjuction with the World Performance Project at Yale and Yale Repertory Theater, located at Yale University, New Haven and wil lbe open to the public.

Includes such varied projects as the American premiere of Engagement Féminin: An Evening of West African Contemporary Dance, created and performed by Art’ Dév/Compagnie Auguste-Bienvenue, based in Burkina Faso, West Africa; Spectral Scriabin, a collaboration between pianist Eteri Andjaparidze and lighting designer Jennifer Tipton, featuring the music of Russian composer Alexander Scriabin; and Neva, an ensemble theatre piece performed by Chile’s Teatro en el Blanco.

Design-Build Competition on the CT River
There is a design-build competition on the Connecticut River in Massachusetts. The deadline is December 10, 2011. The objective of this competition is to uncover new public realm art, architectural and environmental approaches to river-scapes at two scales: regional and intimate. Each designer/artist/team will produce an overall strategy for connecting and relating the four defined sites (and those between) while paying attention to the unique and individual characteristics of each community through site specific work.

TFI Documentary Fund: Provides grants and guidance to support exceptional character-driven, non-fiction works-in-progress that sit outside of the social issue landscape and aim to take audiences into someone else's environment and spotlight the journey of the individual.


Tribeca All Access: Supports working filmmakers who come from communities traditionally underrepresented in the film industry, including female filmmakers and filmmakers of color, by providing grants, access to industry contacts, workshops, panels and year-round support.

TFI Latin America Media Arts Fund: Supports innovative film and video artists living and working in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America whose works reflect their diverse cultures in the documentary or mixed media form.

Dennis Sheehan New England Light and Seasons Exhibit

The landscape paintings of Dennis Sheehan reflect the beauty of nature and provide a rich, sensory experience. Trained in a classical, academic tradition, Sheehan is highly accomplished in the luminist and tonalist styles of the later 19th century in American art. His serene, atmospheric landscapes reveal the lingering glow of light at dawn and dusk and the transition into twilight; the breathtaking effects of early morning, sunset, moonlight, mist-laden skies, and the stillness of the moment. His work will now be on display at the Suan Powell Fine Art gallery from October 14th to November 27th. An opening reception will be held on October 14th from 5-8pm.

Costume Party Fundraise for Guilford Art Center
Guilford Art Center announces its third annual Halloween Costume Party for adults 21 and over on Saturday, October 29, 7-11pm, in the school at the Guilford Art Center. This annual bash will feature appetizers, beer and wine, a DJ and dancing, a silent auction, and prizes for best costumes. We’ve had some great presenters: trash-talking JoAnne Wilcox, graffiti-defending Will Reynolds, eclipse-chasing Maryann Ott, government-revolutionizing Ben Berkowitz, and everyone in between.

Auditions for Playmakers Theatre
Playmakers Theatre calls actors of all types for their annual fall play festival honoring Hamden, CT playwright Thorton Wilder.

Past and present actors with Playmakers, and faces fresh to the scene are encouraged to audition. Thursday October 13th and Friday October 14th 2011 from 6-8pm in Thornton Wilder Auditorium, Miller Library Complex, 2901 Dixwell Ave, Hamden. Please bring a head-shot and resume and a prepared monologue.
