Through Nick’s Eyes: A Tribute to Nicholas Ohly (1938-2007)

The Arts Council of Greater New Haven presents Through Nick’s Eyes: A Tribute to Nicholas Ohly (1938-2007) in the Sumner McKnight Crosby Jr. Gallery, at 70 Audubon St., 2nd floor. The exhibition will be on display Monday, March 29 through Friday, May 21. A public reception is scheduled for Thursday, May 20, from 5 to 7pm.

For 40 years, Nicholas Ohly documented his experiences, however ordinary or extraordinary, in pocket-size notebooks. He made notes to himself, drew scenes and landscapes, and pasted small pieces of paper on which he’d drawn onto the pages of the notebooks.

Ohly spent his life capturing that which piqued his interest through photography, watercolors, ink-pencil and charcoal drawings, and, of course, the notebooks he was rarely without.

In 1968, Ohly and his wife, Sara, came to New Haven, where for 40 years he worked as an architect with Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates on projects that included the Central Park Zoo and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

While he was studying architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Ohly spent portions of three summers on an archeological dig in Greece, from which he traveled, camera in-hand, through Turkey to Syria, Jordan, and Iran.

Decades later, Ohly took a year off to live in the Netherlands, where he painted, visited galleries, and kept detailed journals about his days.

Through Nick’s Eyes is a collection of Ohly’s works in various media created over 40 years.
