Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital announces
Planet/Hospital: Artistic Explorations from the Medical
Frontier,
an exhibition of artwork by hospitalized children and teens
The Child Life Arts and Enrichment Program at Yale-New Haven
Children’s Hospital is hosting its first community exhibition
of images, songs, writing, and video created by hospitalized
children and teens. Planet/Hospital is a multimedia
exhibit that will run from October 6, 2010 to November 12,
2010 in the Sumner McKnight Crosby Jr. Gallery at the Arts
Council of Greater New Haven. An opening reception
is scheduled for Thursday, October 7, from 5-7pm, with a live
performance at 5:30pm.
"This honest and powerful work allows the community a
glimpse into how our patients experience the hospital ,"
said Janice Baker, coordinator of the Arts and Enrichment
Program. Local artists who have worked with patients whose
work is featured in the exhibit include Lindsey Hollister,
Aaron Jafferis, Dana Keeton, Susan Neitlich, and Laki Vazakas.
According to Baker, Planet/Hospital invites the community
to join patients’ multi-sensory exploration of the time
and space between two worlds. Patients strive to stay connected
to the sights, smells, and feelings of home while they forge
connections and redefine a place of refuge, a home away from
home in a foreign environment where they must learn a new
language, adapt to schedules beyond their control, and face
physical challenges they could not have imagined.
Through camera, pen, or microphone, young people develop new
ways of seeing and listening as they explore what is within
them and their environment. An ordinary bedside object or
memento from home becomes a still life when photographed from
an unusual perspective; the incessant sound of beeping equipment
begins the rhythm of a hospital rap; metaphor and sensory
images turn painful feelings into poetry. This compelling
body of work challenges the community to acknowledge and understand
the patients’ perspectives.
The Child Life Arts and Enrichment Program offers opportunities
for learning, creative expression, communication, and enjoyment
of the arts for children and teens while they receive care
at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital. Engaging professional
artists, performers and expressive therapists, the program
strives to create an arts community within the hospital that
reflects and transforms patients’ and families’
experiences with illness. The A&E Program is a component
of the Child Life Department, whose child life specialists
support the psychosocial health and well-being of children
and families through the use of age-appropriate play, medical
education, and therapeutic and creative programs that lessen
traumatic situations and promote normal development.
