Legal Workshops for Creatives

Overview

The Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) has partnered with the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston to develop and implement a Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) service program for the arts sector across Connecticut. The Connecticut Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts will provide legal services, advice, and educational programming to artists, creative entrepreneurs, and arts organizations throughout Connecticut. 

The Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston currently serves as the VLA for the State of Massachusetts and COA is looking forward to the development of programming that benefits Connecticut artists and the creative sector throughout our state.  

What does a VLA do?

• They provide a valuable role in addressing legal and business issues that affect artists and the creative sector.
• A VLA will serve as a matchmaker between lawyers and the arts community and provide pro bono and reduced fees for legal services to qualifying artists, creative entrepreneurs, performing groups, and nonprofit organizations. 
• VLA's are continually seeking attorneys who are committed to the arts and who specialize in matters that are relevant to arts professionals. 

Services include, but are not limited to the following:

• Contract negotiations
• Copyright and Trademarks
• Nonprofit Incorporation Services
• Real Estate/Landlord/Tenant
• Wills, Trusts, and Estate Planning

Note: VLA's do not provide services for criminal matters.
