GREATER NEW HAVEN CREATIVE SECTOR RELIEF FUND ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS
4 More Local Black, Brown, or Indigenous Artists to Receive $10,000 Grants
The Arts Council of Greater New Haven and the City of New Haven's Department of Arts, Culture, and Tourism are excited to announce an additional $40,000 investment in the next 4 recipients of $10,000 unrestricted cash awards from the Greater New Haven Creative Sector Relief Fund.
A Community Advisory Board carefully reviewed nominations for 155 Black, Brown, and Indigenous artists for this final round. Prioritizing those who are actively engaged in their community but don't already have access to resources, they have selected these individuals to receive support:
Matthew Abraham
Born and raised in New Haven, Matthew is an artist who paints imperfect pictures of an imperfect world. He feels this is his responsibility as an artist and will continue making art this way until those that believe we are ok in this world confront the fact that we are not.
Thabisa Rich
A mother, wife, singer-songwriter, founder of Rich Arts Collective, and creative entrepreneur, Thabisa has graced many stages in and out of New Haven. When off-stage, she is working with kids in various school settings and creating programs that will sow back into the community.
Hanan Hameen
Hanan is a doctoral candidate, arts education specialist, dancer, choreographer, author, founder of Artsucation™ Academy Network and Ms. Hanan's Dance and Beyond, advocate for youth, Lupus warrior, and phenomenal woman. She provides programming for the community within New Haven and throughout the African Diaspora.
Anika Stewart
Born and raised in New Haven county, Anika specializes in acrylic paints and has hosted and coordinated pop-up events and shows in New Haven since 2017. Her biggest focus as a young and upcoming artist is to give a platform to artists, especially of color, in our Yale-dominated art scene.
These recipients join 12 others who received awards in November during this phase of the fund. Since the start of this initiative in March 2020, 430 recipients have received over $335,000 in unrestricted relief grants.
While this represents the end of the Creative Sector Relief Fund, the pandemic continues to disproportionally impact independent artists, people of color, and youth in our community. Stay tuned for more grant opportunities soon that will continue to invest in those who have been historically undersupported in our creative ecosystem.
The Arts Council is launching a series of grants in 2022. We also maintain a comprehensive list of local grant opportunities and grantwriting resources.
