The Judicial Committee of the CT State Legislature is holding a hearing on HB 7212, which will expand privacy protections regarding information shared with federal immigration authorities. The hearing will take place Wednesday, March 19th at 10 AM. Our peers at Unidad Latina en Accion (ULA), ACLU-CT, Connecticut Students for a Dream (C4D), and New Haven Immigrant Coalition need us to show up in support of immigrant rights in Connecticut.
According to the ACLU-CT, this bill:
1) prohibits local police from detaining people solely on immigration detainers unless accompanied by a judicial warrant,
2) expands protections beyond police to cover all public agencies, including schools and social services,
3) prevents public agencies from sharing personal information such as addresses, workplaces, and school locations for immigration enforcement, and
4) requires transparency when agencies interact with ICE, including notifying individuals about immigration detainers against them.
