Seats at the Table:The Manifestation of Self-Reflective Truth is an art show on the African Diaspora experience inspired by the powerhouse album by singer/songwriter Solange titled, A Seat at the Table. Her work includes themes of self-care, collective resiliency, and ancestral healing. The Lineage Group will explore these topics as featured artists showcase their views. Now in its 27th year, Buddy—The Buddy Holly Story continues to thrill audiences around the world, and will thrill audiences here at the Shubert Theatre. The show tells the story of Buddy Holly’s short-yet-spectacular career with classic songs "That'll Be The Day," "Not Fade Away," "Oh Boy," Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba," The Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace," and many more. The Hamden Arts Commission | Surcari: Music with a Latin Beat | Nov. 18 | 1 p.m. | Thornton Wilder Hall | 2901 Dixwell Ave.
The Hamden Arts Commission November Weekend Series presents Surcari: Music with a Latin Beat, a family program to learn interactive games and songs in Spanish, based on the musical styles and traditions of the Andes, Spanish Caribbean, Central and South America, Spain, and Mexico. Surcari invites the audience to join them on instruments, dance, create a rainforest soundscape, and play. Their colorful performances engage audiences of all ages as they are introduced to instrumental and vocal music from different Spanish-speaking cultures.

Haitian Art & Handcraft Sale, Opening Reception | Nov. 19 | 2-4 p.m. | Mary C. Daly RSM Art Gallery Mercy by the Sea | Madison
The show benefits the Vassar Haiti Project that has, for more than 17 years, funded primary and secondary school programs, a full-time clinic, and sustainable development initiatives in Chermaitre, a remote mountain village in Northwest Haiti. The Haiti Project, based in Poughkeepsie, NY, engages Vassar College students in global citizenship curriculum and fundraisers through the sale of original and affordable Haitian art and crafts. All purchases are tax deductible. The exhibit is on display until Dec. 21.

The Arts Paper's Bad Cartoon Contest, Deadline Dec. 15.

OK, I know this isn’t happening this week. But if you haven’t started sketching your entry, you should start this week—because you only have one month left (!) to enter the first ever Arts Paper Bad Cartoon Contest!
We're looking for the best of the worst. So bad it’s good. There’s no fee to enter and the prize is minimal: Fame, bragging rights, and personal glee from seeing your craft in print.
Cartoons can be a single-panel or a strip. The winning cartoon will be selected by an esteemed panel of judges. The winner must commit to providing 10 cartoons on publication schedule for The Arts Paper, which will be published both in print and online.
Artists and non-artists of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to enter. Here are a few details:
• We need hard copies.
• All entries must include name, address, phone, email on back.
• Winner must commit to 10 submissions for the entire year, one cartoon for each issue of The Arts Paper. Should the winner be unable to perform the duties of Contest Winner at any point during the year, the runner-up will be asked to carry on from there.
• Entries are due at Arts Council Headquarters no later than 5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 15. We’re located at 70 Audubon St., Floor 2, New Haven, CT 06510.
