LEAP (Leadership, Education, and Athletics in Partnership), a free after-school program serving children and teenagers throughout New Haven, hosted its annual "Thankful Dinners" this week, bringing together students, families, and staff for an evening of gratitude, community, and delicious food.
These gatherings, held at the eight LEAP sites in schools and community centers across the city, turned school cafeterias into festive dining halls. Over 600 students, or LEAPers (the name affectionately given to the children in the program), enjoyed their meals, played games with their peers, and shared speeches expressing what they were most thankful for.
“I’m thankful for sports and for my family because they helped me jumpstart my journey in sports," said Jase Patton.
“I’m thankful for my family, and for the food I get, and for everybody at LEAP," Inez Nunez shared.
The sense of community was genuinely present, with parents joining the festivities, supporting their children, and contributing to the bountiful spread of Thanksgiving favorites. LEAP staff cooked traditional dishes like turkey, mashed potatoes, and yams, while parents supplemented the feast with an array of sweets and snacks such as homemade cookies, cupcakes, chips, and drinks.
“Thanks for doing this, really. He’s so happy to be here," said one parent about her son.
Adding to the spirit of community, volunteers graciously dedicated their time to serve food and assist with the event, creating an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
LEAP's commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally is evident in the success of these heartwarming Thanksgiving celebrations. The Thankful Dinners are a powerful reminder of the positive impact LEAP has on the lives of countless young people in the New Haven community.
