A few months ago, The Arts Paper held its first (and possibly only?) bad cartoon contest. We got some great entries, including a winner that's now available in an April 2018 issue on newsstands and in cafes around New Haven. That image comes from Vyanah Bennett, a student in graphic design and photography at Gateway Community College.

But we wanted to include two of the runners up, both from an artistic duo, because we thought they were sweet and funny.

They come from tag-team Mattia Laurini and Tayyar Rzayev, a doctoral student and architect-in-training. Laurini has been living in New Haven for the past six months, and said that the the bad cartoon contest pushed him to start drawing again after stopping in college.

Rzayev describes himself as an "architect of sorts" who recently moved to New Haven from New York. In his free time he likes to draw and play the drums. He is interested in creative collaborations in both music and art.

Rzayev writes: We often think of animals as goofy and entertaining. But what if they see us the same way? Especially when we smother them with attention.

Rzayev writes: It was raining and we were walking towards the Romance Languages Lounge for lunch with the Dante scholars. On our way, we were wondering what kind of food they had for us. That’s when we got the idea for Steve & Brownie and the chance of meatball precipitation.
